Media Diversity Institute (MDI) works with journalists to report on topics related to diversity - race, ethnicity, religion, class, age, gender, physical and mental (dis)abilities and sexuality. Our trainees then pitch these stories to their respective media outlets, challenging stigmatized coverage that often dominates their local media. At the academic level, MDI works with academics to develop curricula around better portrayals of diversity. We run a MA course with University of Westminster that specifically examines diversity in the media. We encourage civil society activists in our networks to monitor local media for discriminatory coverage, and give them the tools to call it out. By combatting hate and encouraging diversity, our work brings better stories to media outlets around the world.
